Texas Asks Whether Somebody Can Hand You a Lawsuit. Nothing Else.

The Brand Is a Real Asset

LegalZoom has spent two decades becoming the name people think of first, and that recognition does actual work. A first-time owner about to spend money on filings they only half understand gets something valuable from a vendor they have heard of: the confidence that the company will still be answering the phone next spring. Support picks up. The site does what it says. None of that is nothing.

We are not disputing their competence. We are disputing the size of the number attached to one particular line.

$249, Renewing on Its Own

Registered agent service from LegalZoom is $249 a year. It auto-renews, and a July 2026 review of their published pricing surfaced no first-year discount, no promotional tier, and no reduced rate riding along with a bundle. In fairness, that flatness is a virtue. Nothing doubles at month thirteen because nothing was discounted at month one.

The question is what the $249 is buying, and Texas has an unusually concrete answer to that.

The Statute Describes a Door, a Clock, and a Person

Tex. Bus. Orgs. Code § 5.201 sets out what a registered office has to be: a street address in Texas where process may be personally served on the agent during normal business hours. Not an address where mail eventually gets to somebody. An address where a human being can walk up, during the working day, and physically place a lawsuit in the agent's hands.

Two consequences fall out of that wording.

• It is a presence test, not a paperwork test. The state is asking whether somebody is actually there between opening and closing, on ordinary days, at the address on file.
• It does not have to be your office. The registered office is not required to be the entity's principal place of business, which is exactly why hiring an agent is a normal thing to do rather than a workaround.

Nothing in that description scales with price. The doorway does not become more staffed at $249 than at $99, and the working day does not lengthen. What varies between providers is how fast what arrives at the door reaches you, and that is a service question you can evaluate directly rather than a brand question you have to take on faith.

We stop short of calling that unbeatable, because BetterLegal beats it by nine dollars on paper at $90 a year. Among the lowest is the accurate phrase, and it is the one we use.

Yearly, the distance between $249 and $99 is $150. Over five years it is $750, or two and a half times what the state charges to bring the company into existence at all.

Change of Agent From LegalZoom in Texas, Briefly

Because the $249 posts without asking, the useful move is to file the change during the month before your renewal date and then cancel once the state record shows our name in the agent field. Cancel first and you have paid for a lapse; cancel after and you have paid for nothing extra at all.

$249 buys the most recognized brand in consumer legal filings. $99 buys a Texas address that satisfies the same statute, same-day scanning, reminders before the Comptroller's deadline, and a renewal invoice identical to the first one.
