The bias here is structural, so we will name it rather than bury it. Texas Registered Agent.ai is a $99-a-year registered agent service in this state and stands to gain from any reader who moves. The ZenBusiness figures used here are the company's own published rates, noted during a July 2026 review.

What They Do Well

• Onboarding built for someone who has never done this. The interview asks plain questions and does not assume you know what a registered office is.
• One screen for the whole entity. Filings, deadlines, uploaded documents and company details sit together instead of scattering across four tools.
• Design that had somebody thinking about it. In an industry full of interfaces that look like 2011, this one does not.

If you want a compliance workspace, that is a legitimate thing to want, and paying for it is a legitimate decision. We sell something narrower and cheaper.

The Number That Governs Is the Second One

• First year, standalone: $99 plus state fees
• Every year after: $199
• Both published, neither disguised, no dispute from us on that

The catch is not deception, it is duration. Texas keeps a registered agent on your entity record for as long as the company draws breath, so agent service is a recurring line rather than a completed transaction. Recurring lines are honestly measured by their renewal, which puts $199 in your spreadsheet and leaves $99 as the entry ticket.

Against our flat rate that is $100 of separation a year, repeating for as long as you own the company.

Why the Switch Cannot Just Happen Quietly

Texas closes off the passive version of this. Tex. Bus. Orgs. Code § 5.207 puts a condition in front of every designation: whoever is named must already have agreed to serve, in writing or electronically. Nobody drifts into holding your appointment and nobody inherits it by default.

Practically, that means a switch is an affirmative act with a documented yes at the front of it. Whoever takes over from ZenBusiness has to have agreed, on the record, to stand at a Texas address and receive what arrives. We issue that consent the moment you sign up, which is why the paperwork below is a short afternoon rather than a project.

The $99 Column

A caveat on the word cheap. BetterLegal prints $90 annually, so our $99 is among the lower Texas rates rather than the lowest one in existence. What it is, reliably, is the same rate twice.

Taking ZenBusiness Off Your Texas Filing

The mechanism is Form 401, handled by the Texas Secretary of State, a brief filing that rewrites the agent and office entries on your record. The LLC fee is $15, payable through SOSDirect online or by mail with the paper version. ZenBusiness plays no part in it; there is no field on the form for the departing agent's blessing.

You supply three things: the entity name, the state file number attached to the company, and whoever is taking the role, together with a Texas street address. All three arrive prefilled when you enroll with us.

The one rule about timing is that ZenBusiness stays paid until the record flips. Texas wants that agent field occupied on every single day of the company's life, so leave the old subscription running, file the form, check your entity record, and cancel only once our name is the one showing. A $199 annual renewal against a $99 one, for a role Texas defines identically in both cases, with a $15 filing standing between the two. The software is genuinely nice. It is also $100 a year of nice, charged every year, for a service whose entire statutory job is to be reachable at a Texas address when something important shows up.
